Week 13: Online Thanksgiving/Chapter 8 & 9

Teachers act as designers when they are presenting information to students that they would like them to learn. They have to put together power points and other types of models for the students to learn. They give out templates that they sometimes design for us students to go by for certain assignments.

Scratch runs on most computer platforms and gives students the capability to build  programs that manipulate digital images using Photoshop-like tools, add and replay audio tracks and music, and work with video, all while learning fundamentals in computer programming. Scratch can be used in the classroom while a student is putting together a power point presentation or if the student has to make a video and present it in class. It is organized and has different work areas for different things on its main screen. This would be a helpful program for students to use for various types of presentations.

In digital storytelling, technology is the tool used to create a story not the focus of the activity. With digital storytelling, students use their creative skills to create a storyboard on paper, use a camera to shoot their video, and then edit their video on a computer using the specialized programs need fit. To create a digital story, students must create a desktop movie. The first part of digital storytelling is pre-production. This is where the students  brain storm and come up with their ideas of what they want their story to be over. While brainstorming, they use a document called storyboard which provides students the opportunity to create a plan.
MathLab (http://www.mathworks.com) is a program used to visually represent mathematical relationships in problems sot hat learners can the effects of any problem manipulation. When I was in high school our math teacher had us get on MathLab and it really helped a bunch of us learn how to do and understand certain math problems that we would eventually need to know throughout our lives. (EX.) numeric and symbolic representations.

I do think for some people it is possible for them to learn some things from just the TV. For example, if I were to watch the cooking channel I'm pretty sure I could grasp the concept on how to make something. I would just have to take notes and follow the instructions they give over the TV.

Week 11:Lesson Plan

The 3 principles I think would be important for education would be the Probing Priciple, Multimodal Principle, and Semiotic Domains Principle because they include learning in different ways like with groups, things other than just words, and reflection.
Probing Principle is a learning cycle of probing the world (doing something); reflecting in and on this action, and on this basis, forming a hypothesis; reprobing the world to test this hypothesis; and then accepting or rethinking the hypothesis.
Mulitimodal Principle is the meaning and knowledge that are built up through various modalities, not just words. EX.) images, texts, symbols, interactions, abstract design, and sound
Semoitic Domains Principle is where learning involves mastering , at some level, semoitic domains and being able to participate, at some level, in the affinity group or groups connected to them.

I would use the Laboratory Stimulation. The variables the students could manipulte would be ey characteristics or variables within a physical abstract system. The learners may graph different angles in orders to see the effects of the different pendulums.

InConclusion, the stimulation designer builds a models of the phemonema or processes that eneable learners to see how the system works.

Week 7: Power Point

I would use concept maps because they help to organize and come up with ideas for topics. There are also programs on the computer called semantic networking tools that give you a more visual and verbal idea for developing concept maps.
When presenting a Power Point, to keep the audience focused, you don't need to have a lot of flashy backgrounds or a bunch of different ways of introducing new ideas. Keep it simple and to the point. Don't put too much info either. If you have a lot of info the audience is not going to read it all because they will end up getting bored with it. Also don't have a ton of videos and pics. They  can be very distracting because everyone will be looking at those instead of listening and paying attention to you.
There are many writing activities tools that we as teachers and students can learn and benefit from. There are many tools such as computers, PDA's and other types of technology that can help us get information, organize and also help in presentation. If you know how to use these tools then you will be able to teach them in the classroom and that will help benefit you and your future students.

week 6: Investigating with Technologies

PDA (personal digital assistant) is a term for any small mobile hand-held device that provides computing and information storage and retrieval capabilities for personal or business use, often for keeping schedule calendars and address book information handy. In the classroom they can be used for keeping up with assignments, due dates, and test dates.
Onlne survey tools help you to automate the online data collection process and ensures complete accuracy. In addition, they can enable anyone to create and administer professional-looking online surveys. In the classroom it can help the students to have a more accurate/professional survey. 2 goos rules are haveing a lot of questions and try to be specific as to what your are asking.
PDA's and surveys are a big thing for students now-a-days. It s so much easier to get on a computer or PDA and make up a class schedule or a survey. A lot of students have to do surveys as assignments now and by going online and using the online tools they can make sure their surveys are accurate.

week 4: Excel

I think spreadsheet is very useful. It is a very neat thing to use.I would use preedsheet in my class room becuase it could give the students a new insight into making timelines and different types of charts.
As a teacher, i would a spreadsheet to configure my grade book. The advantages a spreadsheet has over a calculator are:
  • formulas already there
  • calculations are done for you

The 3 primary funtions of spreadsheets are:
  • storing
  • calculating
  • presenting information
I think they are awesome because  they are examples of Mindtools that amplifies and reorganizes mental functioning. Building spreadsheet models engages a variety of mental processes.

Week 3: Word

Inspiration is basically the same thing as power point. It does the same things If i were to use Inspiration in the classroom I would use it so the kids could use it as a guide outline for a paper or presentation they were planning to write. It would be a brainstorming process.   The best type of writing actives to use in the class room in my opinion would be research papers. When do a writing assignment students can help each other by reading other papers and voicing their onion on it and giving advice and making corrections. A technology tool that can be used would blogging. Blogging gives students a way of submitting their opinion and thoughts and having others read it and make comments. I have had to teach my friend algebra before and i knew a lot of but after i sat down with her and explained it i felt like i understood it better also.
In conclusion, Inspiration would be a good tool to use in the class room because it could give the teachers and students an easier way to plan out a paper or presentation.
